FAQ: Who are you?

Details of our organisation and Tony Surridge can be found by clicking on the ‘About us’ tab on our web site.  In terms of our Sutdy Materials, at this time we offer a small range of ‘ACCA' electronic study books (E-books) simply as a market test, before we launch our full range that cover the other subjects in the ACCA syllabuses.  Progressing from there we aim to provide study material to cover other governing body examinations including CIMA, ACA, CAT and ICAEW.  The Tony Surridge brand name of E-books is called the +AddVance range.

Tony Surridge has been teaching in the professional ‘private sector’ in the UK for over 35 years and is concerned that the current method by which study material is supplied (in the form of large paper-based ‘manuals’) is both expensive, and both environmentally and student unfriendly.

The aim of our +AddVance E-book range, which we have been working towards for several years now, is to deliver study material to students, instantly and digitally anywhere in the world, for a price less than a sandwich and soft drink in London! Quite an ambitious target, we’re sure you’ll agree!

Quality is of vital importance in what we do. We have built a firm foundation of professional knowledge, teaching expertise, practical know-how and a keen ability to present this vital study material in a way that is optimal for our students.  We work hard to make sure that you are the best you can be in the exam.

FAQ: What are the Tony Surridge +AddVance E-books?

Our powerful +AddVance teaching system comprises of separate publications:
  • Exam Study Textbooks §
  • Revision Mnemonics and Charts
  • Practice Questions & Answers

1.   ‘Exam Study Textbook: A routemap through the syllabus’

Our ‘Exam Study Textbook: A routemap through the syllabus’ E-book has been developed to ease your study experience, raise your comfort level and skill in dealing with exam questions and covers the syllabus by using two integrated elements:

  • qComprehensive study text
  • Meaningful overview diagrams and charts
The book will be beneficial to you in three different ways:
  • qAs a ‘beginner’. Our ‘Exam Study Textbook: A routemap through the syllabus’ E-book can be read from cover to cover using the text and the diagrams in physical sequence (just like a normal book - from page to page).

    The text includes:
    • factual discussion, explanations and description
    • examples
    • activities with answer guidelines
    • tutorial comments
    • research views (if appropriate)
    • real-world examples (if appropriate)

  • As a ‘re-sitter’.  If this meets your particular study needs you can simply concentrate on the overview diagrams and charts and therefore not become involved in working through the detailed text. You will, however, still be able to read any part of the text by using the electronic word search facility, or else by hyperlinking to the text you require from the syllabus content which is presented at the front of your book.
  • qAs a ‘reviser’. In the same way as the ‘re-sitter’, during your revision period you will be able to focus your attention only on the overview diagrams and charts as your vital ‘last minute cram’.

The content of your study text is hyperlinked to the syllabus reference so that you can ensure complete coverage.

2.   ‘Revision Mnemonics and Charts - Remembering the Vital Points'

Our +AddVance E-book ‘Revision Mnemonics and Charts – Remembering vital points’ contains a minimum of 50 acronyms (often many more).  Each mnemonic is on a separate page.

Mnemonic is a general word.  It is defined simply as some device which aids the memorisation of something and these devices come in a variety of forms.  One sort which people find useful is the rhyme (or jingle), however the most popular form of mnemonic used by students are based on acronyms.  For example to recall the spelling of the word mnemonic, you could memorise the following phrase:

Monkey Nut Eating Means Old Nutshells In Carpet

Taking the initial letters of each word spells out MNEMONICA popular method for learning lists, used by  students, is to memorise a word which spells out the initial letters of words used in the list.   A well known  example is SWOT,  which stands for:

                                S   Strengths
                               W   Weaknesses
                                O   Opportunities
                                T    Threats

We are firmly established in designing acronyms for our students and these are based on the following  characteristics which help make the mnemonics more memorable:

- We use
positive, pleasant words.  The brain often blocks out unpleasant ones.
          - We use humour where possible.  Funny or peculiar words are easier to remember than normal ones.
          - We try to design an acronym (word) that relates to the context of the list being remembered.  This is not always easy to achieve.  Look at the following example:

"What are the advantages of using budgetary control in an organisation?"

B       Basic plans are continually reappraised
U       Unifies the management team (coordination)
      D       Decentralises decision making (delegation)
      G       Gets managers involved (motivation)
Ensures resources are used appropriately (value for money)
T       Time based targets are established (performance appraisal)

           Participation is required (improved decisions)
L       Lets managers know their contribution (morale building)
A       Attention is placed on results (cybernetic control)
N       Needs are identified and resources planned for (decision making)

         - We use a word or words that are vivid enough to be clearly remembered.

3.  ‘Practice Questions & Answers:  Drilling Down'

The surest way to succeed in exams is to constantly recall, rethink, test and refresh your knowledge.  You need to be continuously looking back over your shoulder rethinking and reworking topics from as many different angles as possible.  Working through exam-status questions has helped thousands of students build their confidence and to sharpen their exam techniques.

Examination status questions act as a stimulus for a student’s learning process.  They provide a basis by which you can practice answering questions and also continuously assess how well you are doing.  They provide targets and allow you to test yourself.

We summarise the benefits of students working through questions as follows:
          - they providesub-targetswithin your learning programme;
          - they add stimulus to your studies;
          - they provide you with valuable examination practice
          - they allow you to monitoryour own progress.

Our +AddVance range offers an E-book ‘Practice Questions and Answers: Drilling down’ for each available subject.  Each E-book contains numerous exam-status questions with detailed answer guides.  Questions and answers are hyperlinked and so you will not need to turn pages to find suggested solutions.

The reason why our prices are set at an extremely (almost unrealistically) low price is because our
costs are low and we are able, and pleased, to pass the cost savings on to our customers. Why are our costs so low?  Well, to reiterate some points made on another part of our web site …

  • we are a paperless (electronic workflow) college.
  • we reach our customers by sophisticated low-cost e-business infrastructures.
  • we do not carry costly inventories of unsold paper books.
  • we do not suffer high print and dispatch costs.
  • we use modern e-business systems to produce high-quality, relevant, up-to-date, user-friendly, immediately accessible study material with very low overhead costs.
  • we drastically cut the cost of non-value bureaucracy by using a virtual management approach to the way we service our customers.

This results in dramatic cost reductions when compared with traditional paper-trail study material.  We believe, and our students tell us, that this is the most efficient and effective way of delivering a value-for-money service to modern forward-thinking students.

FAQ:  Are you concerned about the environment?

We are particularly conscious of the pressing responsibility of everyone to preserve the world’s resources and environment. We use minimum paper-based direct and indirect marketing.  We require our students to purchase our products by using our online website so that less paper is used, and hence less trees are cut down. When involved in any ‘face to face contact teaching’ we use electronic teaching aids which also reduces the amount of flip-chart paper, and difficult to dispose of, white board markers. When we use printed materials, we attempt to ensure that it is all printed on post-use recycled paper.

We also look to provide support for students around the world, including those in Developing Countries who have a lower income level, by providing on-line tuition at peppercorn rates, often charging only 10 percent of comparable competitive services (i.e. only £3 for a full study text instead of a potential £30)
