Here are a few ideas for getting the essential marks. Some of them are almost ancient ritual.
- DO be sure what your personal aim is … to PASS your exam with 100% certainty.
- In the hours leading up to your exam … DO relax and socialise – play sports, watch TV and rest your brain.
- DON’T get despondent ahead of your exam. You know more than you admit to yourself.
- DO go to bed early on the night before your exam.
- DO be fully equipped. Remember, for the exam you will need … a calculator, pen (with spare), pencil (with sharpener), rubber, tipex, highlighters and a straight-edge.
- DO give yourself enough time to reach the exam hall. DON’T arrive out-of-breath! DON’T use your writing hand to carry heavy bags to the exam.
- DO watch your time – it has the habit of vanishing! Allocate time by sub-question. 1 mark = 1.8 minutes, therefore 5 marks = 9 minutes. DO chose the questions where you can gain marks more easily. If a question takes longer to answer than the allotted time then DON’T carry on with it – and move to the next question. DON’T waste a moment of exam time.
- DO answer the correct number of questions. The word 'AND' in a question usually means that marks are being awarded for different parts of the question.
- DO look for marks – they’re just waiting to be taken.
- DO read each question carefully and make sure you know what is being examined. DO answer the question asked! You can only do this if you analyse what is required. DO take care to link the question to your knowledge and use your intellect to assist in the analysis.
- DON’T rush in by immediately writing. Examiners have given you thinking time which must be used. DO plan your answer by jotting down a few ideas and figures.
