True pass rates revealed

Something appears to be going terrible wrong with the long-term ACCA final exam pass rates. The results of both first time sitters and those who eventually pass the final level have slumped dramatically, according to the Professional Oversight Body.

The current first time pass rate for ACCA students at the final level is a miserable 43% (for 2009 the latest date when figures are available). This compares with 51% who managed to pass the exams in the previous year. The massive fall leaves ACCA students isolated as CIMA students have been pushing up pass rates. The current pass rate for first time students at the final level of CIMA is 63%, a whopping 20% better than ACCA. The percentage of passes at the final exam at CIMA is 59%, some 15 percentage points better than the ACCA results.

The chartered bodies have very healthy pass rates for both the first timers and those who eventually get over the final hurdle.

CIPFA and ICAS are a bit of a flies in the ointment, as they don’t provide all the figures asked for by the Professional Oversight Board. No matter how students sit the exam there must be a measure for first time that would be acceptable for both parties surely.
